Take Time For Your Feelings

April 1, 2025 by Marian Buck-Murray Leave a Comment

When life feels overwhelming,  take time to acknowledge what’s happening and how you feel.

So often, when we’re faced with monumental changes and events, we want to hurry ahead to fix things. Or, distract ourselves in order to avoid our feelings.  Often, we worry because we don’t know what to do.  We might feel helpless to visualize positive solutions.  All of this can feel downright paralyzing.

Yet, what if the clarity we need is right around the corner…

Clarity is crucial for forward motion.  However, clarity can feel impossible to attain after we’ve been hit by something big.  When life as we know it shifts, we can easily be thrown off center.  It’s during these difficult times that it’s good to grieve what we’ve lost, and acknowledge how hard things feel. This exploration of feelings will help us get the clarity we need to move forward.

So often we’re taught that we need to pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off, and forge ahead.  Certainly, sometimes this is absolutely necessary. Yet, when we continually soldier on, without taking time to grieve our losses, we carry them forward. Ultimately, we can get bogged down by our past.

Unresolved feelings have a habit of seeping into our daily lives, clouding vision, behavior, and overall wellbeing.  It’s as though we’re continually looking through the filters of past hurts and grievances.  These filters can really clog up after a while.  As with any filter, it’s crucial to clear out the gunk for best results.

Allowing space for uncomfortable feelings is what helps them clear.  This clearing contributes to the forward moving clarity we need. Taking time to sit with our feelings can actually free up invaluable time and energy for the future.

Here are some suggestions:

Take breaks, here and there, to sit with yourself.  Tune in.  Notice your feelings. If you can, imagine embracing your feelings with love and compassion. Allow yourself a good cry, if needed.  Simply giving your feelings some compassionate attention can help them soften.

Notice where you typically get triggered. Ask yourself what you’re telling yourself, and what you believe about yourself.  Question beliefs which feel limiting or hurtful. Use your feelings as a guide to a deeper understanding of yourself.

Know that chaotic, helpless feelings are just that.  They hurt, yet they are feelings. And, feelings, when worked with, can transform into better-feeling feelings.

Use EFT Tapping.  Tap to help soften and release uncomfortable feelings.  Focus on the feeling and locate where you feel it in your body.  Breathe deeply, and tap on the EFT tapping points.  No need to say words, but you can if you want to.  Here’s a link to the tapping points.

Change the channel. Spending time with your feelings doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck in them.  Turn your focus to what feels positive and uplifting as well. This, combined with holding space for your pain, lets your nervous system know that you can toggle from one to the other.  In other words, it empowers you to get unstuck.

Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or professional. Allow yourself to ask for help.  Processing what has happened, or is happening, can be difficult.  A compassionate witness is sometimes what we need most.

Life is a mix of experiences and emotions, ups and downs, stillness and movement, and everything in between.  When we allow space for all of it, we’re able to surf life’s waves with less fear, and a lot more confidence.

Sending you oodles of compassion,

Marian

Getting Unstuck, When You Don’t Know Where To Start

June 23, 2022 by Marian Buck-Murray Leave a Comment

Many of us are going through some heavy challenges right now.  A number of my friends and clients are either at a crossroads, or feeling incredibly stuck, and unable to move forward.

It’s during these trying times that we yearn to know what’s next.  We feel frustrated that we don’t know what ‘next’ is, or how to get there.  Often we get so mired in what might happen in the future, that we immerse ourselves in piles of worry and confusion. Needless to say, it can be a very uncomfortable place to be.

What’s important to realize is that when we can’t see ahead, it’s time to look right in front of us.  Not backwards, or forwards.  Rather, right here in the present moment.  It’s here, in this moment,  where we’re able to course correct and clarify our vision.

Sounds good, but how do we do that? We start, simply, by tuning in to ourselves.  We notice what’s going on within — our emotions, our needs, our desires.  By making this internal connection, we’re able to determine what we need in order to move forward.  This is the first crucial step.

We equip ourselves for the challenge ahead by asking: ‘how can I help myself right now?’ — and by committing to the answers we find.

This might mean getting more sleep. Or eating a healthier diet.  Or meditating more often. Or releasing pent-up emotions.  It might mean reaching out to a trusted friend or healing professional.  Perhaps it’s finally reading that book we’ve been meaning to read.  It could mean anything.  Only you will know what’s most meaningful for you right now.

Any time we move forward, we need to let go of something in order to lighten our load.  For example,  letting go of what we think will happen or what we think must happen.  In addition, letting go of resentments, grudges, and pent-up emotions will serve us enormously.  By letting go of what clouds our vision, our vision begins to clear.  Seeing more clearly eases our way forward.

If you’re feeling stuck right now, pause, and tune in. Listen to your inner wisdom. Take action to care for your needs.  Get clear on what’s most important to you.  Determine what you need to let go, and begin the process. Once you begin to clarify your vision, it will become easier to take the steps towards transformation.

Some Useful Tools to Help You Get Unstuck:

Meditation.  There are many ways to meditate.  Find what’s best for you.  If you don’t know how, there are many helpful books and teachers on the topic.  Insight Timer  is an app which offers a vast array of guided meditations and meditation music, along with a timer for silent meditations.  Regular meditation will help you access your wise inner guidance.

EFT Tapping.  EFT tapping is a wonderful tool to help you release the emotions and beliefs which are clouding your vision.  In addition, tapping helps to reduce cortisol, making your brain more efficient.  Efficient brain function, and a calm nervous system will do wonders to assist you in finding solutions to face any challenge. Heart Breath.  The Heart Breath meditation will help you drop out of a depleting, defeating, mind loop.   By calming your heart, you will help calm your mind, and open up to new possibilities and solutions.  For a free download of my guided Heart Breath Meditation, enter your email in the Heart Breath box to the right of this post.  Or, find me on Insight Timer, where I’ve posted a number of meditations, including the Heart Breath.

5 Tips to Get Clear and Focused

January 7, 2020 by Marian Buck-Murray Leave a Comment

Okay, it’s time.  Time to get focused.  Time to move forward into the new year.

Nothing new here — we all know about the resolutions, goals, and intentions that seem so important at the start of a new year.  And of course, this is 2020, which promises to be monumental…..

But alas, sometimes, it can be downright hard to get up and running.  Especially after a month of Holiday distractions and excess.  And if you’re feeling stuck, groggy, or unmotivated, I’ve got some tips that might just help.

I know all about being stuck, with that awful nagging voice that tells me I should be doing something, that I should be motivated, that I should be moving forward a lot more quickly.

It’s usually at this moment, when I’m feeling completely unmotivated, that I realize I’m not clear, and certainly not focused.  And, when I’m not clear or focused, I can find innumerable ways to keep my self stuck.

Typically, the reason I’m not clear and focused, is because I’m still carrying the residues of the past.  In the case of the Holidays, aspects of my consciousness might still be holding on to the season.

It’s tough to get clear, when my consciousness is loitering in the past.

With that in mind, I’ve created this video with my top 5 favorite tips for getting clear and focused.

Enjoy!

Happy New Year!

Clear and Focused

January 8, 2019 by Marian Buck-Murray 2 Comments

January is a time to reboot, refocus, and get clear about our lives.  Despite the cold here in New Jersey, it’s an invigorating time of year, and I love it.  As I look out my back window, past the bare winter branches, the view is clear, far, and wide.  The possibilities feel endless.

Along with these endless possibilities, comes the need for focused clarity.  Gazing into the far off  yonder feels freeing, and inspiring, yet I know I can’t stay there.  It’s time to get back to work.  Back into focus. It’s time for renewed clarity.

Here are some tips to get back into focus after a distracting holiday season, or at any time that you feel the need to clear your mind of all the muddle.

Meditate  — The practice of meditation will help you clarify and calm your mind. The act of focusing on your breath helps train your mind to focus when and where you need to focus.  I talk about meditation all the time, because it works.

Fresh Air – With colder weather, it might be tempting to stay inside.  Ignore the temptation.  Being out in the fresh air allows you to breathe in more oxygen. When your brain gets more oxygen, it functions more efficiently, boosting clarity and concentration.

EFT Tapping —  EFT tapping does wonders for a distracted, overworked mind.  The act of tapping helps bring you back into your body. In addition, it helps lower cortisol, thereby returning more blood to the thinking part of your brain, increasing its efficiency.  And, tapping helps bring your brainwave state from a beta level to an alpha level.  An alpha brainwave state will help you feel more calm and focused. Contact me to learn more about EFT Tapping.

Get Clear about Fear – Sometimes fear will make us choose distraction over focused action.  Often, we’re not fully aware that fear is causing us to stay distracted. Take time to look at what you’re avoiding by being distracted. Notice any fear that comes up around whatever it is you’re avoiding.  Sometimes it’s enough just to acknowledge the fear, and take action anyway. Other times you might want to use EFT Tapping, or talk with a practitioner or therapist for help. Contact me if you’d like help releasing fear.

Positive Self-Talk – Keep your eye on the prize.  Notice what you’re saying to yourself.  Keep yourself in a positive space by continually telling yourself you can do it.  For example, repeat to yourself that you love being creative, productive, successful, disciplined,  etc.   In her book Becoming, Michelle Obama describes how she successfully uses the refrain : Am I Enough? – Yes I am, to help herself overcome big challenges.  Remember that you too, are enough! Get the positive talk going, and keep it going.  It’s amazing what it can do to improve your self-perceptions.

Eat Green and Clean —  A clean, green diet will do wonders to increase clarity and focus.  Dark green and cruciferous vegetables are especially helpful for detoxifying the blood.  The fewer toxins in your system, the more focused you will be.  In addition to increasing vegetable consumption,  reduce or eliminate foods that contribute to toxification.  These foods include refined carbohydrates, wheat products, sugar, alcohol, and processed foods with artificial ingredients.  And, remember to drink plenty of water.

Music —  I use an app called Focus@Will. This works so well for me that I sometimes actually resist it when I don’t want to get down to work.  There are numerous apps with music designed specifically for studying, writing, working, etc.  Used regularly, this type of music will cue your mind to come into focus.

Aromatherapy – Aromatherapy is another way to cue the mind.  Candles scented with herbs can be effective.  Aromatherapy infusers, using your favorite essential oils, are also useful.  Experiment, and find what works for you.

Happy New Year!  Wishing you a fabulous, amazing year, with oodles of LOVE, PROSPERITY, FRIENDSHIP, GOOD HEALTH, FUN, and ADVENTURE!

Peace,

Marian

How To Embrace Uncertainty

January 9, 2017 by Marian Buck-Murray Leave a Comment

Indecision confusion. Portrait confused young woman pointing in two different directions not sure which way to go isolated grey background. Negative emotion facial expression feeling body language

I hear it from everyone… “These times feel so uncertain.”… It feels like we’re standing on the brink of something…but what exactly?

What I also hear, from many of my clients, are the common worries: “I don’t know what to do.”  “Nothing is clear.”  “I haven’t heard back yet.”  “I have no idea what’s going to happen…”

Certainly, uncertainty can feel real uncomfortable.  It’s that unsettling place of limbo, betwixt and between.  And it can be especially hard when it creeps into to your job… your finances… your family…your health… your relationship.

I believe that in times of deep uncertainty, the only thing to do, is to look within, and bring focus to the present moment.

Here are some tips to help you embrace your times of uncertainty:

  1. Ground yourself with morning meditation. A daily meditation practice will help you infuse a sense of peace into your day. It will also help you open up to the intuitive and spiritual guidance necessary to clarify your situation.
  1. Write daily morning pages, or keep a journal. The regular practice of free-style writing will allow you to tap into your deeper wisdom.  Use this as a tool to release the mind chatter that clutters your mind. Pose questions as you write, and allow the answers to come to you.
  1. Get clear about what is certain for you in this moment. Although parts of your life might feel completely uncertain, it’s likely that other parts hold more certainty.  For example, what beneficial daily routines, activities, friends, or family, can you count on right now?  Use this time to cultivate meaningful habits and relationships which will help you move forward.
  1. Be open to good outcomes. We never know exactly what will happen in any situation. However, it might feel natural to focus on what ‘could’ go wrong, when faced with uncertainty.  Instead, open your mind to the numerous positive possibilities available to you in any moment.  Use your imagination to visualize positive scenarios that appeal to you.  Keeping yourself in a positive mind frame will help you create more of what you want.  Your brain’s reticular activator is always active, and it will help you find more of whatever (negative or positive) you’re focused on.
  1. Use EFT Tapping. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.  EFT Tapping is the perfect tool to release old limiting beliefs and negative mind chatter.  Times of uncertainty can easily trigger feelings of fear, low self-worth, and self-doubt.  EFT Tapping helps to neutralize these negative feelings, and dismantle stuck patterns of negative self-talk.  Click here to learn more about EFT.
  1. Use the Heart Breath. The Heart Breath is a very powerful technique, especially during times of uncertainty.  It will help you reduce fear, and increase clarity.  I’ve got a free audio meditation.  Click here for the download.

Sending you wishes for Peace and Clarity.

In Courage,

Marian
