Inner Peace for Changing Times

February 18, 2025 by Marian Buck-Murray Leave a Comment

How to Create Inner Peace during Changing & Challenging Times

It’s not always easy to stay calm, peaceful, and centered.  Sometimes it might feel downright impossible.  What’s happening in the world is hard to avoid.  It seeps into our consciousness through many sources.   The news.  Headlines on emails.  Conversations with friends and families.  Social media.

Certainly, it’s important to be aware of what’s happening around us.  For peace of mind, however, it’s crucial to set boundaries on information intake.  By creating boundaries with incoming information we can give it space, without allowing it to consume our focus and sense of wellbeing.

We all have inner parts who want to keep us safe.  These parts often use anxiety and hypervigilance as tools to keep us on edge and aware.  Unfortunately, habitual anxiety and hypervigilance only serve to weaken us, obscuring creativity and best solutions. By protecting and relaxing the nervous system, we give ourselves better access to inner guidance, new ideas, and feelings of inner peace.  Softening harsh feelings can feel incredibly empowering.

Here are some tips to help you create inner peace:

Notice where you are putting your attention.  Notice how you feel when you focus your attention on different aspects of your life, or the world around you.  To create more inner peace, help yourself focus more of your attention on what feels good, right, and empowering. Set boundaries where needed.

Commit to incorporating relaxation practices into your day.  If your nervous system is taking in more stress than usual, it is doubly important to unwind and relax.

Tune into uncomfortable feelings.  Be gentle and compassionate with these feelings, as if you were comforting a child.  Listening to your feelings will foster a sense of self-acceptance, and validation.  Sometimes, this is all that’s needed to quiet inner turmoil.

Use breathwork to help calm anxious feelings.  There are a variety of techniques which help to calm the nervous system. These include:  Box Breath, 5-7-8 Breath, Voo Breath, Heart Breath and more.  Find the techniques which work best for you. You’ll find many examples on YouTube.

Tap.  EFT tapping has been clinically documented as an effective technique for reducing cortisol.  Stress-related cortisol spikes can interfere with good sleep, cognitive clarity, emotional wellness, digestion, and immunity.  Just to name a few.  Try tapping while tuning into your feelings. You don’t need to say any words. Tapping can help release some of what is causing your discomfort.  For more information on tapping, contact me.

Try an acupressure mat.  An acupressure mat has rubber spikes which stimulate acupressure points.  At first it might feel uncomfortable, but when the endorphins kick in, it can feel incredibly relaxing, even sleep-inducing.

Meditate.  Find time during the day to meditate.  If you’re new to meditation, start with a few minutes, and build from there.  Consider reaching out to a meditation teacher for guidance.  If it’s helpful, listen to calming music, or a guided meditation, to help you get started.  Meditation has been shown to change the way our brains handle stress, in a very good way.

Find activities which light you up.  No matter how silly, frivolous, or unimportant they might seem.  Take a walk or a hike.  Sing.  Dance to your favorite music.  Create art.  Cook a favorite recipe.  Take a class. Visit with friends.  Watch something funny.  Read a great book. Listen to an uplifting podcast. Tap into what’s going right in the world.  Find what speaks to you.  Stay open to feelings of joy and wonder.

Essentially, so much of creating inner peace is about noticing which activities help you feel calm, centered and empowered, and which ones don’t.  Choose how to spend your precious time, attention, and energy. Empower yourself with practices to help relax your nervous system.  The more empowered you are, the easier it will be to navigate whatever you’re navigating.

Wishing you Peace,

Marian

Resolve Inner Conflict

July 13, 2022 by Marian Buck-Murray Leave a Comment

It happens.  You make a decision.  It feels right.  It feels good.  Then 30 minutes later, doubt creeps into your mind.  No, you think, this is the wrong decision.  There are so many reasons why this is the wrong decision.  Back and forth you go.  Yes. No. Yes. No.

Inner conflict is no fun.  It can be confusing and cause us to shut down. Often, when we can’t make a clear decision, it feels better to do nothing at all. Sometimes this is the right solution.  Sometimes it’s not. What’s important, however, is to look closely at the inner conflict.

Inner conflict occurs when two or more parts, or shadows, want control.  Typically, each will have a different goal.  One might be the adventurer, eager to go out and explore.  Another might be the worrier, who wants to stay safe, and hidden.  Still another might be pestering the adventurer to take part in risky behavior.

These shadow parts often get triggered when confronted with life’s stressors and big decision. When triggered, they can throw us into a flurry of self doubt and second guessing.  As they pull us back and forth, they show us the places where we need healing.  Until these shadow parts are healed, they will continue to get triggered, and seek control during times of stress.

Inner conflict calls for conflict resolution.  Without it, it’s hard to make progress. It’s a matter of helping our frightened parts feel safe, supported, and empowered.  It also means helping the more critical, pushy parts to feel content with what’s most beneficial for us.

In order to resolve inner conflict, we must start with curiosity, acceptance, introspection, and commitment.  It’s about listening to the shadow parts which are influencing our lives. Which ones win most often?  Which ones are pushed aside?  Which ones are unduly influenced by other people’s opinions?

Conflict resolution means listening to all sides, and doing the work to create consensus. Sometimes, this work is best done with a healing professional.

When we resolve our own personal conflicts, we bring clarity to our challenges and decisions.  We find beneficial solutions.  We create a sense of inner strength and unity. This helps us build confidence, momentum, and inner peace.  It’s well worth it!

Helpful Practices for Resolving Inner Conflict Include:

Meditation – With meditation, you can train yourself to notice the differing thoughts and feelings which arise during your practice.  This will help illuminate conflicts to address.

Journaling – Use writing to dialogue with conflicting parts.  Ask questions.  Get to know your inner shadow parts — their motives, goals, fears, and dreams.  Ask what they need in order to resolve conflict.

Heart Breath – The Heart Breath helps you drop out of a conflicted mind, into the peace of your heart.  Using this breath will help you clarify true priorities and desires. To download a free Mp3 of my guided Heart Breath, enter your information in the box to the right of this post.  Or, listen to it on Insight Timer.

EFT Tapping – EFT Tapping is helpful for releasing the emotions associated with triggered shadow parts.  To learn more about EFT Tapping, contact me.

Matrix Reimprinting – This technique facilitates a deep connection with shadow parts, in order to help transform outdated beliefs and pent-up feelings. To learn more about Matrix Reimprinting, contact me.

May you find peaceful resolution for all of your conflicts.

Peace,

Marian

Shadow Love — A Call For Unity within Ourselves

February 2, 2021 by Marian Buck-Murray Leave a Comment

Unity, such a beautiful word.  During these times of deep division, many of us have been calling for it.  But, let’s face it, it can be hard to find common ground with those we call our enemies.  At a time when it might feel easy to dehumanize, condemn, or ‘cancel’ those whom we judge, why on Earth would we want unity?

It’s all very understandable — this ‘us and them’ mentality.  Yet, our lack of unity leaves us polarized.  And it’s difficult, if not impossible, to move forward when we’re feeling polarized.

Now I’m not suggesting that we befriend or agree with everyone.  Rather, what I am suggesting is that we seize this moment to befriend those parts of ourselves which we’ve condemned, hidden, neglected, and judged.  It’s when we make peace with ourselves that we find it easier to find peace with others.

We all live with some degree of inner polarization.  It shows up as that struggle to accept ourselves just as we are. That habit of hiding who we really are.  The masks we wear to please and impress. The lies we tell to save face.

However, it’s when we reintegrate the shadowy places within us, that we find profound inner peace.

Sometimes we’re so afraid of our shadows, we’ll do everything possible to get away from them.  But, alas, we can’t outrun our shadows.  Avoidance won’t make them disappear.  In fact, they usually come back even stronger, popping into our lives when we least expect it. As long as we’re driven to avoid our shadows, they will continue to sabotage our lives.

It’s when we turn to embrace our shadows, that they help us transform our lives.

During times of stress, it’s easy to fall back into our shadow patterns.  Those habits, behaviors, and moods, we’d rather not admit to.  So, what if,  instead of judging ourselves, we pause to notice what’s happening.  As painful as it might feel, our shadows are calling for healing.  When we move into acceptance, we can take a deeper dive to see what’s hiding beneath the surface.

So, how do we embrace what we don’t want to embrace?  How do we feel compassion for a part ourselves that we truly dislike?

A good start is to approach our shadows as we would a scared child.  When we approach ourselves with gentleness, compassion, and non-judgement, we can listen on a deeper level.  This simple act of compassion helps illuminate what’s truly needed to feel better, happier, and empowered to transform our lives.

It takes time, and commitment to work with our shadows.  But it’s worth it.  EFT Tapping and Matrix Reimprinting are particularly helpful tools in shadow work.  Contact me to learn more.

Peace,

Marian

Coming Back to Center

November 9, 2018 by Marian Buck-Murray Leave a Comment

Centering, it’s what we need more of right now.  The holiday season is full of distractions, pulling us here, pulling us there.  Top it off with a contentious election season, and the seemingly non-stop series of tumultuous events —  it can feel nearly impossible to stay centered, calm, and relaxed.

Getting pushed off center is like losing our power connection.  Every time we get pulled away, thinking thoughts of how things should or shouldn’t be, we lose power.

Our minds sometimes have us convinced that we need to be worried, concerned, or somehow attentive to all that’s going on. The emails, the tasks, the phone calls, the news, the problems, all grabbing at our attention.  If we’re not careful, these distractions will continually force us off center.

Problem is, when we’re off center, we’re out of sync with our intuition, and our connection to all that is.  We may think we’re doing something important by worrying, or obsessing, but if we’re pulled out of the present moment, we’re off center.  When we’re off center, we’re weakened, and we limit our access to fresh ideas, solutions, and insights.

Getting back to center means letting go of distracting thoughts and concerns, so we can settle into our intuitive, powerful strength.  It means dropping from a busy beta brain wave state, into a slower, more relaxing alpha brain wave state.  This alpha brain wave state is where we find access to new insights, intuition, and deeper connection with the universal field. This alpha state is what helps our brains work more effectively, allowing us to function more powerfully.

Here’s how to get back to center

Meditate.  I know. I talk about meditation all the time.  I talk about it because it truly is that powerful.  Sitting quietly for even 5-10 minutes in the morning, and/or at different times throughout the day, does wonders to center the mind.  Don’t worry if you can’t ‘get rid’ of distracting thoughts. Allowing yourself to observe the distracting thoughts, as opposed to engaging with them, will help you come back to center.  As you get more practiced with meditation, it will help you deepen your sense of inner peace and connection.

Use the Heart Breath.  The heart breath is a very powerful way to drop out of a busy mind, into the peace and calm of your heart. The heart’s electromagnetic field is far more powerful than that of the brain.  By breathing slowly and deeply, while imagining that you’re breathing through your heart, you will help yourself become centered in your body.  This heart breath will increase the power of your heart’s electromagnetic field. This expanded heart field will entrain your brain, bringing it from the beta brain wave state, to a more relaxed alpha or deeper.  For a video to learn more about the Heart Breath, click here.

Use Insight Timer — Insight timer is one of my absolute favorite apps.  It’s free, and it offers thousands of free meditations. Find the meditations, music, and sounds that work best for you.  Check out the binaural beats, which will work with your brain to help it come to a more relaxed, centered place.

Take a Magnesium Salt Bath — Step out of the fray, into the soothing comfort of a nice, hot, bath.  Magnesium will help you relax.  Water will help you feel more centered.

Take a Walk in Nature — Being fully present in Nature, without the distraction of phones and computers, is one of the best ways to come back to center.  Help yourself stay centered by doing a walking meditation, observing and expressing gratitude for Nature’s gifts along your way.

Practice Yoga — Yoga will help you feel more aligned, grounded, and centered.

Use EFT Tapping — Tapping is one of the most effective ways to bring yourself back to center.  Just by tapping on your karate chop, you begin to bring yourself back into your body.  By continuing with the points, you help reduce the cortisol that keeps you on edge. Often, you don’t even need to use words while tapping.  You can simply tap through the points, breathing deeply, and allow yourself to come back to center.  Click here for more info.

Come back to your center, it’s where you’ll find your beautiful Self.

In Love and Courage,

Marian
